 Japan’s Allergen Labeling Rules: The 8+20 Rule

In Japan, food labeling laws are very specific. When shopping at supermarkets or convenience stores, look for these categories on packaged processed foods.

The 8 Specified Ingredients (Mandatory Labeling
By law, these 8 items must be listed on packaging because they are specified ingredients:
・Shrimp (えび)
・Crab (かに)
・Walnut (くるみ)
・Wheat (小麦)
・Buckwheat (そば)
・Egg (卵)
・Milk (乳)
・Peanut (落花生 / ピーナッツ)

The 20 Recommended Items (Voluntary Labeling)
Caution: The following 20 items are equivalent to specified ingredients, but labeling is voluntary and they may not be listed.
